2012 June - Plant Deer Resistant Perennials!

If you live on an acreage, chances are that you have deer visiting your garden regularly. While we can't stop them from eating while they wander through, we can plant perennials that will discourage the deer from eating every- thing. Remember that this is just a guideline. The eating habits of deer will vary depending on what is available, the season, the region and the individual deer. If they eat something they don't like, chances are they won't touch it again but if that is all that is available...they will eat it. Some deer will develop a taste for a plant that other deer won't touch (some kids like brussel sprouts).

Select deer resistant varieties and plant them in sensitive areas of the garden such as along pathways, near the vegetable garden or fruit trees. After tasting these less appetizing perennials, they should move on to less sensi- tive areas.
