2012 April - New Trees and Shrubs for 2012
2012 promises to be a great gardening year. We are already seeing signs of spring – pussy willows are popping, geese are arriving, transplanting has started in the greenhouses. Now is the time to start planning the additions and possible changes to your yard. Cannor Nurseries will have a wonderful selection of new trees and shrubs as well as the tried and true varieties. Look for the following new varieties when you come to see us this spring.
BIRCH - Dakota Pinnacle – Betula platyphylla – A narrow, upright Birch (2m wide) with snow white bark. Resistant to Bronze Birch Borer.
BROOM – Cyni – Cytisus nigricans – This heavy blooming shrub has showy yellow flowers in spring and summer. Excellent xeriscape plant!
HONEYBERRY – Berry Blue – Lonicera edulis kamtschatica – This variety of Honeyberry is a vigorous grower. The fruit is tasty through not quite as sweet as Borealis and Tundra. It is also a great pollinator for the other varieties. Definitely worth a try.
NINEBARK – Summer Wine – Physocarpus opulifolius – A wonderful Ninebark with the colour of Diabolo and a dwarf habit (1.25m). Wine coloured foliage with soft pink to white flowers. Can be used as a small hedge!
OAK – Northern Pin – Quercus ellipsoidalis – A stately ornamental tree with rich glossy green foliage that turns spectacular shades of red in fall. This tree will grow to 15m tall and 12m wide.
ROSE – Bill Reid – Rosa x – This is the latest in the Canadian Artist series. It has a beautiful yellow flower and strong disease resistance. Grows to 1m tall and wide.
- Prairie Snowdrift – Rosa x - This fragrant, double, creamy white rose blooms all summer. Excellent for hedging. Grows to 1.25m tall.
PINE – Mugo Winter Gold – This form of Dwarf Mugo Pine turns an attractive golden yellow in fall and retains the colour through the winter.
SPRUCE – Iseli ‘Foxtail’ – This deer resistant Spruce is extremely narrow (2.5m). It has unique twisted blue needles that form tufts at the end of the branches.
Cannor Nurseries will be carrying a selection of shrubs in 10 gallon pots this year. If you are interested in “INSTANT” plant material for your yard, these shrubs may be for you. We will also have a selection of hardy Clematis in a larger 2 gallon pot.
